1) GLAST: Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope
http://glast.sonoma.edu

GLAST Logo
GLAST is a major NASA gamma-ray satellite planned for launch in 2007.
SSU leads the E/PO program which includes:

· Curriculum materials (grades 9-12) including An Active Galaxy Educator Unit, TOPS Far Out Math! and Scale the Universe, presented at National Teacher’s Workshops
· Yearly educator workshops, co-sponsored by GSFC and/or MSFC
· Space Mystery Development in 2003-2005
· Global Telescope Network for synoptic observations with GLAST
· PBS Nova documentary on black holes, gamma ray bursts and active galaxies to air in March 2006
· Ten Educator Ambassadors to help develop, test and disseminate GLAST-related classroom materials and activities

2) Swift
http://swift.sonoma.edu

Swift Logo

Swift is a NASA gamma-ray burst explorer satellite launched November 20, 2004. SSU leads the E/PO program which includes:

· Curriculum materials (grades 7-12): Gamma-ray Burst Educator Unit, EM Spectrum exercises, Waves and Motion, Newton’s Laws, presented nationally in teacher workshops
· What’s In the News: multimedia instructional series with short news items about Swift-related topics
· Swift Gamma-ray Burst Real-time Sky Map - See where the most recent Gamma-Ray Bursts were seen in the sky.
· GEMS guide: Invisible Universe: the Electromagnetic Spectrum from Radio Waves to Gamma Rays
· Five Educator Ambassadors to help develop, test and disseminate Swift-related classroom materials and activities

3) XMM-Newton
http://xmm.sonoma.edu

XMM-Newton Logo

XMM-Newton is a European Space Agency X-ray Spectroscopy observatory launched in December, 1999. In 2003, SSU took the lead for the US portion of the E/PO program which includes the development of:

· Curriculum materials for grades 6-12, including a Supernova Educator Unit.
· CLEA Lab
· Starlab Planetarium show showcasing the X-ray sky
· Two Educator Ambassadors to help develop, test and disseminate XMM-Newton-related classroom materials and activities

4 ) NuStar
http://nustar.sonoma.edu

NuStar Logo

NuSTAR is a focusing hard X-ray small explorer mission. The program is in an extended Phase A study. If confirmed, it will be scheduled to launch in
2009. SSU leads the E/PO program for NuSTAR, in partnership with the Space Place.

5 ) Educator Ambassador Program
http://epo.sonoma.edu/ambassadors/

EA Logo

The Educator Ambassador Program consists of twenty-three educators who work in conjunction with different NASA scientists and E/PO team members at SSU to develop workshops and curriculum materials.

Training for the teachers in the Summer of 2004 included a ten-day long intensive seminar at SSU and Stanford University which immersed the educators in high-energy and gravitational wave astronomy. Materials from the training session can be found here: http://epo.sonoma.edu/ambassadors/training04/index.html

SSU E/PO team members and Ambassadors disseminate curricular materials via workshops and conferences at the national, state, and local levels. A list of future events can be found here: http://epo.sonoma.edu/newsandevents.html

6 ) Global Telescope Network (GTN)
http://gtn.sonoma.edu/

GORT Dome

The Global Telescope Network (GTN) is an informal association of scientists, students, individuals and observatories interested in supporting the NASA Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST), Swift, and XMM-Newton missions by obtaining and reducing ground based observations for objects related to the primary science goals for these missions.

7 ) Gamma-ray Burst Real-time Sky Map
http://grb.sonoma.edu/

grb skymap

The Gamma-ray Burst Real-time Sky Map is a web application designed to give up to the minute updates on gamma-ray burst events reported by NASA and ESA's gamma-ray burst detecting satellites.
This site features:

8 ) You Are Here
http://epo.sonoma.edu/youarehere/

The subject matter taught in this six-session course covers the size and scale of the Universe surrounding us. Your student/child will explore objects from the infinitesimal to the infinite using multi-wavelength imagery. They will write out their cosmic address in the Universe, thus giving them a better understanding of where they are in our world, Solar System, Galaxy, and beyond. All of this will be done over the six sessions with each session covering one size range of their Universe.

9) NBSP: North Bay Science Project
http://nbsp.sonoma.edu

NBSP Logo

A California Science Project site which aims to improve science education by deepening the content knowledge of educators in various fields of science, informs teachers of current scientific research, and models effective classroom pedagogy for science learning.

· 2003 Summer Institutes: Physical Science, Earth Science and Teacher Leader Institute in Life Science
· Academic Year Workshops
· Support for Science Instruction in Sonoma, Marin, Napa, Mendocino, Lake and Solano counties

10 ) Space Mysteries
http://mystery.sonoma.edu

Space Mystery Logo

Formerly know as the LEARNERS (Leading Educators to Applications, Research and NASA-related Educational Resources in Science) Space Mysteries, this was a NASA Learning Technology Project, and Space Mysteries is one of 7 LEARNERS programs. Now the GLAST mission is supporting the design of two Space Mysteries games to continue the life of the project. These games are:

· Web-based, inquiry-driven mysteries
· Aligned with national science and math standards
· Fun! They engage the students’ imaginations by making them the Space Sleuth, given an astronomy-based mystery to solve
· Play three mysteries and two more on the way at: http://mystery.sonoma.edu

11 ) Universe! Structure and Evolution of the Universe Education Forum (this site is no longer being updated)
http://universe.sonoma.edu

Universe Logo

SEU was one of four major NASA themes in the Office of Space Science. SSU supported the SEU Education Forum at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory by coordinating, producing and distributing materials to 10,000 educators:

· Cosmic Journeys folders in 2001
· Seeing and Exploring the Universe kits in 2002.
·We also coordinate the SEU Ambassadors program.
